Fashion designer and Entrepreneur Amelia Friend is leveraging her experience in Motherhood and the challenges faced working in the fashion industry to create her new maternity and breast-feeding fashion brand, Nomadic Mother.
Feeling rejected from the fashion industry after having children, Amelia used her skills to design a variety of dresses using clever pattern cutting and completely adjustable features which will see the pieces fit from week 1 to 40 in pregnancy and beyond. The whole collection is designed with discrete zips across the bust to allow for breastfeeding access without the need to remove anything.
Nomadic Mother aims to support women not just in feeling comfortable in their ever-changing pregnant and postpartum bodies, but also to support the community it serves. @nomadic_mother on social media offers a space for women to share open and honest stories about their journey throughout motherhood and offers a real and honest insight into Amelia’s own experiences as she raises her children and runs her business from her London-based canal boat.
Amelia talks about feeling the pressures to “snap back” and fit into her old clothes after giving birth and understands first-hand that as a new mother, you’re very aware of the lifestyle and body change you’re going through. For this reason, Amelia wanted to create something that flatters the changing shape of pregnant and postpartum bodies, takes the stress out of getting dressed, and provides the comfort of discreet breastfeeding access.
Having worked in the industry for over a decade, Amelia had seen the wastage and mass production of fast fashion from the inside and felt strongly about taking a different approach for Nomadic Mother. Creating pieces that would last the test of time, and make use of high-quality sustainable fabrics and British manufacturing.
The collection is developed in a range of eco and dead-stock fabrics and have all been made in the UK to support a sustainable core ethos. Nomadic mother is launching online on the 6th of march from its online store at nomadicmother.co.uk . A launch party is being held on the 5th March in Victoria park v&a museum where you will be able to shop the full collection, meet Amelia and hear more about her story.
